Palavakkam Beach

Chennai and the sea are inseparable. Marina Beach may be the city's most famous shoreline and Elliot's Beach one of its most popular evening destinations, but both can become extremely crowded, particularly during weekends and holidays.

Move south along the coast and the experience begins to change.

Palavakkam Beach is one of the quieter stretches along this side of Chennai. Located close to East Coast Road, between the better-known coastal neighbourhoods of Thiruvanmiyur and Neelankarai, it is easily accessible without attracting the kind of crowd normally associated with Marina.

A Quieter Chennai Beach

What I liked about Palavakkam Beach was precisely what it did not have.

There were no rows of tourist attractions competing for attention and no large crowds occupying every available stretch of sand. The beach felt more like a neighbourhood seafront used by people living nearby.

The wide sandy stretch, waves of the Bay of Bengal and comparatively smaller crowd made it a pleasant place to spend some time, particularly during the morning or towards evening.

That does not mean the beach will always remain empty or perfectly clean. Palavakkam has become increasingly well known, and the condition of any urban beach can change depending on crowds, weather and maintenance.

The Residential Side of Palavakkam

Palavakkam is not an isolated beach surrounded by open land.

Residential streets and houses come quite close to the shoreline. In fact, this is one of the features that distinguishes it from beaches farther down the East Coast Road.

For local residents, that proximity is probably an advantage. A short walk can take them directly to the sea.

For someone specifically looking for a long family outing with more open surroundings, I personally prefer some of the beaches farther south along ECR, such as Akkarai. Palavakkam, however, works well when all we want is a relatively quiet walk beside the sea without travelling far outside Chennai.

Not a Newly Discovered Beach

I would also avoid calling Palavakkam a “new beach.”

The coastline has obviously been here all along. What has changed is Chennai.

As the city expanded southwards along East Coast Road and residential neighbourhoods such as Palavakkam, Neelankarai and Akkarai grew, these stretches of coast became increasingly familiar to Chennai residents looking beyond Marina and Besant Nagar.

That is how I prefer to look at Palavakkam Beach: not as a newly created tourist attraction, but as one of Chennai's older stretches of coastline that gradually entered the city's regular leisure map.

Morning or Evening?

Like most Chennai beaches, Palavakkam is best experienced when the sun is less severe.

Early morning brings walkers and local residents to the shore, while evenings are better suited for sitting beside the sea and watching the light change.

The Bay of Bengal can look inviting, but this is an open sea rather than a controlled swimming area. I would enjoy the shoreline without becoming overconfident about entering deep water.

Another Side of Chennai's Coast

Palavakkam Beach is not a place I would compare with Marina in terms of landmarks, history or scale.

Its appeal is much simpler.

It gives us the sea without necessarily giving us the Marina crowd.

For those of us who live in Chennai, discovering such smaller beaches also changes the way we look at the city's coastline. Marina and Elliot's may be the famous names, but the Bay of Bengal continues southwards through several neighbourhoods, each offering a slightly different experience.

Palavakkam is one of them.

Happy travelling.
