Pookode Lake

Wayanad has forests, waterfalls, hills and plantations almost everywhere.

And then there is Pookode Lake.

Located near Vythiri, Pookode is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forests and the hills of the Western Ghats. The lake is not very large, and perhaps that is part of its charm. From almost anywhere along its banks, the forest seems remarkably close.

The water remains at the centre of the experience.

Boating at Pookode Lake

Boating is naturally one of the most popular activities here.

Pedal boats move slowly across the lake, giving visitors a different view of the wooded slopes surrounding it. Kayaking is also available.

But you do not necessarily have to get into the water to enjoy Pookode.

There is a pathway around the lake. Walking along it, with water on one side and thick greenery on the other, was more interesting to me than simply standing at a viewpoint and taking a photograph.

Walk slowly.

There are birds to watch, reflections on the water and, depending on the season, aquatic plants scattered across parts of the lake.

More Than Just the Lake

Pookode has developed into a family tourist attraction over the years.

There is a freshwater aquarium and a children’s park. Shops near the lake sell handicrafts, spices and other local products.

All these provide something extra to do, particularly if you are travelling with children.

But they are not really why I would come here.

The lake and the forest are enough.

Interestingly, Pookode is also associated with a fish species named Pethia pookodensis, recorded from this lake. The Panamaram River, which eventually joins the Kabini river system, also originates in this region.

A Quiet Break in Wayanad

Pookode is one of those places that does not demand much from the visitor.

Take a boat if you want.

Walk around the lake.

Sit for a while and look at the forest.

If you are travelling through Wayanad with a packed list of viewpoints, waterfalls and plantations, this is a good place to slow down for some time.

Sometimes, a lake surrounded by trees is enough.

Happy travelling.
