Gaya

Gaya is one of India’s ancient sacred cities. Pilgrims visit the city particularly to perform pind daan, the ritual offering made in memory of departed ancestors.

The religious landscape of Gaya extends beyond a single temple. The Phalgu River, sacred water bodies, old shrines and ritual sites together form part of the pilgrimage experience.

At the centre of this sacred landscape stands the Vishnupad Temple.

The Vishnupad Temple is one of the most important places of worship in Gaya. It stands close to the Phalgu River and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

The principal sacred object within the temple is a footprint believed to be that of Lord Vishnu. It is impressed upon a block of basalt and enclosed within the sanctum.

According to the tradition associated with the temple, Lord Vishnu subdued the asura Gayasura by placing his foot upon him. The sacred footprint is connected with this episode, while the name of Gaya itself is traditionally associated with Gayasura.

The temple is closely linked with the performance of ancestral rites. Pilgrims arriving in Gaya often visit the Vishnupad Temple as part of a larger circuit that includes the Phalgu River and other sacred sites nearby.

The temple complex is usually busy with priests, pilgrims and families performing rituals. This continuing tradition is central to the character of the place. Vishnupad is not merely an old monument to be viewed from a distance; it remains a living centre of worship.
