Churches of Puducherry

Puducherry's French connection is visible in its streets, colonial buildings and old residential quarters. It is equally visible in its churches.

Some of the city's prominent churches go back several generations and continue to function as active places of worship. Their architecture is also quite varied. One has an imposing Gothic character, another has a distinctly European classical appearance, while the cathedral carries a much longer history behind its present structure.

For me, these churches form an important part of exploring Puducherry beyond its beaches, cafes and French Quarter.

This page brings together the churches of Puducherry that I have visited. More will be added as I continue exploring them.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Located close to Puducherry railway station, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is difficult to miss.

Its red-and-white exterior, pointed arches and Gothic-inspired architecture give it a very distinctive appearance. Inside, the stained-glass windows are among the features worth slowing down to observe.

The church was later elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important churches in Puducherry.

The present cathedral stands on a site where earlier churches were built, destroyed and rebuilt during the turbulent colonial history of the town. Its white façade, curved architectural elements and spacious interior make it quite different from the Sacred Heart Basilica.

It also serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore.

Our Lady of Angels Church

Our Lady of Angels Church, also known as Notre Dame des Anges, stands close to the seafront in the French Quarter.

Built in its present form in 1855, the church has a graceful European classical appearance. The pale exterior, tall columns and symmetrical façade fit naturally into the surrounding French streets.

It is perhaps the setting that adds to its charm. Walk out of the church, and the Promenade and the Bay of Bengal are only a short distance away.

These three churches already show how much variety exists within Puducherry's Christian heritage.
