Krishnapuram Temple

Krishnapuram Venkatachalapathy Temple, located near Tirunelveli, is one of Tamil Nadu’s finest but less widely known sculptural treasures. Dedicated to Vishnu as Venkatachalapathy, the temple is particularly celebrated for its remarkable stone sculptures and pillared mandapams associated with the Vijayanagara–Nayak period.

This is not a temple that can be understood through a quick visit. Some of its life-sized sculptures appear almost ready to move. Their facial expressions, ornaments, clothing, posture and even the tension within the human body have been worked into stone with astonishing precision. Several pillars present complete scenes rather than isolated figures, turning the temple into a gallery of stories carved in granite.

The temple also has a five-tiered Rajagopuram, multiple mandapams, separate shrines and long rows of sculpted pillars. Yet it is the extraordinary craftsmanship of the figures that makes Krishnapuram unforgettable.
