Temples of Singapore

Singapore’s Hindu temples are an important part of the city-state’s multicultural heritage. Many were established by Indian communities who settled here during the nineteenth century, and several continue to serve both as active places of worship and as striking architectural landmarks.

Two of the best-known Hindu temples are located in very different historic neighbourhoods. Sri Mariamman Temple stands in Chinatown and is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, located in Little India, is dedicated to Goddess Kali and remains one of the area’s most prominent religious landmarks.

Both temples are instantly recognisable for their colourful gopurams crowded with sculpted deities and sacred figures. Beyond their elaborate façades, they offer a glimpse into the religious traditions and community life of Singapore’s Indian population.

Veeramakali Amman Temple

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Its colourful architecture, numerous sculptures and busy devotional atmosphere make it one of the most distinctive temples in Singapore’s Little India.
