St. Mary’s Basilica, Bangalore: The City’s Oldest Church

Among the historic churches of Bangalore, St. Mary’s Basilica occupies a special place. It is regarded as the oldest church in the city and is also the only church in Karnataka to have been elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica.

The church attracts visitors throughout the year, but September is particularly important. The annual St. Mary’s Feast draws a large number of devotees from Bangalore and surrounding areas.

From a Small Chapel to a Basilica

The history of the church goes back to the beginning of the 19th century.

After the British captured Srirangapatna from Tipu Sultan in 1799 CE, the French priest Fr. Abbe du Bois came to Bangalore and worked towards restoring the Catholic community in the region.

In 1803 CE, he built a small chapel at the site where the present basilica stands.

A decade later, in 1813 CE, the chapel was enlarged with British assistance and was named the Church of Purification of Our Lady.

The building did not survive for long. It was destroyed during communal violence in 1832 CE. The church that visitors see today was rebuilt much later, in 1882 CE, under Rev. L. E. Kleiner.

Gothic Architecture

St. Mary’s Basilica is spacious and built in the Gothic style, with the church laid out in the form of a cross.

The first feature that catches the eye is its tall tower, rising to about 160 feet. Pointed arches, vertical lines and the height of the structure give the façade the character associated with Gothic churches.

In front of the church is a prominent statue of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus. The figure immediately draws attention before one enters the building.

Another statue of Mother Mary stands outside the main church structure. A local belief is associated with this image. It is said that when the church was attacked and destroyed in 1832 CE, attempts were also made to damage this statue. According to tradition, those who tried to do so lost their sight, and the statue remained unharmed.

Inside the Basilica

The Gothic character continues inside the church.

The high interior, arches and decorative details give the basilica an impressive appearance without making the space feel overly crowded.

Several statues of Christian figures can be seen inside. These include representations connected with Jesus Christ, some of his apostles, and Mother Mary holding Jesus.

Spend a little time looking beyond the main altar. The statues, architectural details and the height of the interior together give the basilica much of its visual character.

St. Mary’s Basilica is important not only because of its age. Its history stretches from a small chapel built in 1803 CE to the large Gothic church that survives today. The annual feast, the Marian devotion associated with the site and its long connection with Bangalore’s Catholic community continue to keep the church active rather than merely historic.
