Nava Shakti Vinayaka Temple – Mylapore

Mylapore is known for ancient temples. But not every popular temple here needs to be centuries old.

The Nava Shakti Vinayaka Temple, located at the busy Luz Corner, is a good example.

Built in the twentieth century, this is a relatively modern shrine. Yet its location ensures that it is difficult to miss. Luz is one of the busiest parts of Mylapore, with shops, traffic and people moving in every direction. Right amidst all this activity stands this compact Ganesha temple.

And devotees keep stopping.

Nava Shakti Vinayaka

The main sanctum enshrines Ganesha as Nava Shakti Vinayaka.

The temple is not large or architecturally elaborate. There are no massive gopurams or long prakaras to explore.

Its appeal is different.

This is very much a neighbourhood temple, woven into the everyday life of Mylapore. Shoppers, office-goers and people simply passing through Luz Corner can step inside, offer a quick prayer and continue with their day.

Near the entrance are two small murtis, one of Ganesha and the other of Lakshmi.

They are easy to overlook.

But small details such as these are often what make even a modest temple worth observing.

A Temple at a Busy Junction

Perhaps the location is what I find most interesting about Nava Shakti Vinayaka Temple.

Mylapore has grander temples. It has older temples. It certainly has temples with much more architecture and history to study.

Yet this little shrine at Luz Corner remains busy.

A temple does not always need antiquity or monumental architecture to become part of a neighbourhood.

Sometimes, being present at the right place for generations is enough.
