Churches of Karnataka

Karnataka’s Christian heritage is reflected in churches belonging to different periods and architectural traditions. Some began as small places of worship and gradually developed into important pilgrimage centres. Others were built on a monumental scale, with tall towers, pointed arches and stained-glass windows dominating the surrounding skyline.

Churches of Bengaluru

St. Mary's Basillica

St. Mary’s Basilica is regarded as the oldest church in Bengaluru and occupies an important place in the city’s Christian history.

Its story began with a small chapel established in the early nineteenth century. The present church was completed later in the same century and was built in the Gothic architectural style. Its tall central tower, pointed arches and strong vertical lines give the façade an imposing appearance.

A prominent statue of Mother Mary holding Child Jesus stands in front of the church. Another image of Mother Mary outside the main structure is associated with a local tradition connected with the destruction of an earlier church at the site.

Inside, the height of the prayer hall, repeated arches and sacred figures create a sense of space without making the interior feel overloaded.

The annual St. Mary’s Feast, celebrated in September, draws large numbers of devotees and shows that this is not merely a historic monument. It remains an active and deeply revered place of worship.

Churches of Mysuru

St. Philomena's Church

St. Philomena’s Church is one of Mysuru’s most striking landmarks.

The present structure was completed in 1936 and was designed in the Neo-Gothic style. Its most noticeable features are the two slender towers that rise high above the façade and remain visible from different parts of the city.

Pointed arches, narrow openings and stained-glass windows strengthen the Gothic character of the building. The height of the structure draws the eye upwards even before one enters.

Large sculptures of St. Philomena and St. Joseph holding Child Jesus stand on either side of the church. St. Philomena is represented with an anchor and arrow, attributes connected with her traditional iconography.

The interior is equally impressive. Paintings, sculptures and stained-glass windows depict episodes associated with Jesus Christ and Christian tradition. More than the individual decorative elements, however, it is the extraordinary height of the interior that leaves the strongest impression.

The church forms an important part of Mysuru’s varied architectural landscape, which includes palaces, temples, colonial buildings and public monuments.
