Matsya Darshini Aquarium – A Former Landmark of Visakhapatnam

For many years, a visit to Visakhapatnam's RK Beach Road could also include a quick trip into an underwater world.

Matsya Darshini Aquarium stood right on the busy Beach Road, close to some of the city's most popular attractions. Established in 1994, it became a familiar name among tourists as well as local families.

It was never a huge aquarium.

That was part of its simplicity.

Rows of tanks displayed freshwater and marine fish of different colours, shapes and sizes. Some were familiar. Others were the kind that would make you stop for a closer look. The collection included colourful reef fish and several unusual aquatic species.

The entire place could comfortably be covered in less than an hour.

Children, of course, were usually the happiest visitors.

A Small Attraction on a Famous Road

The location added considerably to its popularity.

Step outside and you were back on RK Beach Road, with the Bay of Bengal just across the road and several other Visakhapatnam attractions nearby. Matsya Darshini therefore became an easy addition to an evening spent around the beach.

The aquarium itself had an interesting beginning. It was created in a building that had earlier served as a Municipal Commissioner's bungalow and was subsequently converted for displaying marine and freshwater life.

For more than three decades, it remained part of the familiar landscape of Beach Road.

Matsya Darshini is No More

That story came to an end in May 2026.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation demolished the Matsya Darshini building following issues surrounding the property and redevelopment of the Beach Road area.

So, this article now records a place that visitors can no longer see.

It may have been a small aquarium. It may not have compared with the grand aquariums found in major cities around the world.

But for generations of children and families in Visakhapatnam, Matsya Darshini was part of an outing to RK Beach.

And sometimes, even modest places become part of a city's memories.

Happy travelling.
