Bird Watching made easy - Pallikkaranai Eco Park

Watching birds in the middle of Chennai does not sound easy.

Pallikaranai Eco Park makes it surprisingly so.

The ecological park was opened in 2021 within the Pallikaranai marsh, one of Chennai's most important surviving wetlands. Spread over about 2.5 hectares, the park was designed to give people a closer look at the wetland without having to venture into the marsh itself.

A tiled walking path runs through the park for nearly two kilometres. Trees planted along the route provide shade, while the wetland remains visible from different points along the walk.

This combination works well.

You can come here simply for a morning walk. But once you start looking towards the water, the birds quickly take over your attention.

A Bird Watcher's Corner in Chennai

Pallikaranai attracts both resident and migratory birds.

Depending on the season, one can spot egrets, herons, cormorants, pelicans, ibis, ducks and several other waterbirds across the marsh. During the migratory months, the number and variety become even more interesting.

The park also has information boards introducing visitors to the birds, plants and other life forms found in the wetland.

You do not necessarily need to be a serious bird watcher to enjoy this place.

Look towards the water.

You will soon begin noticing movement everywhere.

More Than Just a Walking Park

What makes this park different is the setting.

On one side is a quiet wetland filled with birds. Not far away are busy roads, apartments and the expanding city.

That contrast tells the story of Pallikaranai.

The marsh survived despite decades of urban growth around it and has since received international recognition as a Ramsar wetland.

The Eco Park gives Chennai residents a simple way to see why this wetland matters.

It is green, peaceful and easy to access. More importantly, it introduces people to a natural landscape that existed here long before the city grew around it.

For bird lovers, carry a pair of binoculars or a camera with a good zoom lens.

For everyone else, just come for a walk.

The birds will probably do the rest.
