Aappoor Nithya Kalyana Perumal Temple

Aappoor is a small village located near Chengalpattu, about 5 km from Singaperumal Koil. Though the village itself is quiet and little known, it is famous for a small Vishnu temple situated on top of a hillock.

If you travel from Singaperumal Koil, you will first reach Thirukkachur, about 3 km away. That village is known for its three ancient Shiva temples, including one located on a hill. From Thirukkachur, another 2 km takes you to Aappoor, where yet another hill shrine awaits.

The temple is dedicated to Aappoorar, popularly known as Nithya Kalyana Perumal. Reaching the shrine requires climbing more than 500 steep steps, so the visit calls for a little patience and stamina.

The temple itself is very small and has only one main shrine. Vishnu is worshipped here as Nithya Kalyana Perumal and is shown in a standing posture. Unlike many Vishnu temples, he is not accompanied by his consorts. A small Garuda icon faces the sanctum, and there are no other shrines or deity icons within the temple.

The most unusual feature of the temple is the attire of the presiding deity. Nithya Kalyana Perumal is dressed in a saree, as it is believed that Lakshmi is present within him. Because of this belief, the deity is adorned in a feminine style.

The temple is also closely associated with marriage prayers. Devotees believe that unmarried men and women who worship here may be blessed with an early marriage.

No clear legend is known about the origin of this temple, and its history too remains uncertain. Yet, its secluded hilltop setting, unusual form of worship, and strong local faith make it an interesting destination.

One practical warning: the hill is home to many monkeys, especially near the main shrine. It is wise to keep food and loose belongings safely packed.

The climb can be tiring in the heat, so it is better to visit during the cooler part of the evening.
